Importing Jewelry to Germany: Guide

Importing Jewelry to Germany: A Buyer's Guide to EU Compliance and REACH

Germany is Europe's largest jewelry market, with fashion jewelry demand driven by fast-turnover retail, online D2C brands, and seasonal collections. But selling into Germany means meeting some of the strictest product regulations in the world. This guide explains what German importers and brands need to know about REACH, nickel release limits, and working with a compliant wholesale jewelry factory.

Why Germany Is a High-Opportunity but High-Scrutiny Market

German consumers are value-conscious but also quality-aware. Retailers such as Galeria, About You, and thousands of independent boutiques and TikTok Shop sellers expect consistent quality, accurate material labeling, and documented compliance. If your jewelry fails a customs or market surveillance test, you risk confiscation, fines, and delisting. The good news: working with a factory that already builds compliance into production removes most of that risk.

The Two Rules That Matter Most: REACH and Nickel Release

1. REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006

REACH restricts hazardous substances in articles sold in the EU. For jewelry, the key restrictions include:

  • Cadmium: limited to 0.01% by weight in metal components and jewelry parts.
  • Lead: restricted in articles supplied to the general public; 0.05% by weight threshold applies to jewelry components.
  • Nickel: governed separately under entry 27 of Annex XVII (see below).
  • PAHs and phthalates: relevant for coated parts, cords, and plastic elements.

REACH compliance is not a one-time certificate — it is an ongoing obligation. German authorities (such as the Gewerbeaufsichtsamt and customs laboratories) can test products at any time. Your supplier should provide material declarations and, where relevant, third-party lab test reports.

2. Nickel Release Under EN 1811 / EN 12472

Nickel is the single most common cause of jewelry recalls in the EU. Under REACH Annex XVII entry 27, nickel release from items intended to come into prolonged contact with skin must not exceed 0.5 µg/cm²/week. For piercing posts and inserts, the limit is 0.2 µg/cm²/week. Testing follows EN 1811 (release measurement) and EN 12472 (simulated wear and corrosion).

This is where material choice decides your compliance path. At China Jewelry Factory in Meilong, Haifeng County, Guangdong, all titanium steel and 316L stainless steel pieces are produced as hypoallergenic, nickel-free and lead-free. 316L is surgical grade, and every titanium steel and 316L item receives IP/PVD vacuum plating plus 48-hour salt-spray tarnish testing — a practical indicator of plating durability, which matters because worn-through plating can expose base metal.

Other German and EU Requirements to Plan For

  • California Prop 65: not an EU rule, but many German brands selling to the US want one supplier covering both. Our production is compliant with REACH and California Prop 65.
  • Packaging: Germany enforces the Verpackungsgesetz (Packaging Act) and LUCID registry. Ensure your supplier can ship in recyclable or registrable packaging, or plan to repackage locally.
  • Labeling: material claims (for example "sterling silver" or "gold-plated") must be accurate. Mislabeling is treated as misleading commercial practice under the UWG.
  • GPSR: the General Product Safety Regulation requires a responsible economic operator in the EU and traceable product identification.

How to Vet a Jewelry Supplier for the German Market

Ask for these before placing a bulk order:

  • Material composition sheets for every metal and plating used.
  • Nickel release test reports referencing EN 1811 / EN 12472.
  • REACH and Prop 65 compliance statements, ideally with lab reports from SGS, Intertek, or TÜV.
  • Plating durability data — salt-spray hours and plating thickness in microns.
  • A sample order so you can test wear, tarnish, and skin reaction yourself.

Sampling at China Jewelry Factory runs 7–10 days, which lets German buyers validate finish, weight, and clasp quality before committing to volume.

MOQ, Customization, and Cost Realities

Traditional German importers often assume factory MOQs start in the hundreds. Our model is different: MOQ is 5 pieces per style across 632 original styles spanning necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, sets, pendants, anklets, and brooches. Materials include titanium steel, 316L stainless steel, sterling silver, gold-plated finishes, pearl, cubic zirconia, and moissanite.

OEM/ODM, private label, and custom logo are available with no minimum brand order, and custom gift boxes can be produced for retail-ready presentation. This suits German boutique owners, Amazon.de and Otto sellers, and influencer brands testing new SKUs without inventory risk.

Logistics and Communication

Orders ship from Guangdong with free shipping over USD 50. Support is available in 9 languages, which reduces miscommunication on specs, plating colors, and packaging artwork. For quotes, samples, or compliance documents, contact:

Practical Checklist Before You Import

  • Confirm nickel-free and lead-free material declarations in writing.
  • Request EN 1811 test data for any skin-contact item.
  • Verify REACH and Prop 65 statements cover the exact materials ordered.
  • Order 5-piece samples per style to test quality and finish.
  • Register packaging obligations under LUCID if you are the German distributor.
  • Keep batch records so you can trace any future compliance question.

Germany rewards sellers who take compliance seriously. By sourcing from a Meilong-based factory that builds REACH-aligned materials, nickel-free titanium steel and 316L, and tested IP/PVD plating into every order, you can enter the German market with documentation — not just product.
